unloading salt kiln fired during workshop

This summer, I'll host three weekend-long workshops in my pottery studio in Nelson County, a beautiful spot overlooking the Rockfish River. Nelson County is a small rural county, about 150 miles southwest of Washington DC. The workshops are geared to working potters and serious students who want to focus on a specific aspect of making or firing pots.

2009 Summer Workshop Schedule

June 13 - 14, 2009

Glazing, Loading and Firing my Stoneware Reduction Kiln

On Saturday, we will decorate students' bisqued work, using my studio glazes, then load the cone ten reduction kiln.  As we fire the kiln together on Sunday, we'll continue exploring decorative glazing techniques.  The workshop will emphasize mastering the art of loading and firing a propane reduction kiln.  It's designed primarily for those considering a switch to reduction firing.

Workshop fee of $180 includes glazes, firing, and lunch both days.  Limit seven students.

July 11 - 12, 2009

Altering Thrown Forms

During this two-day throwing intensive, we'll focus on making oval and squared shapes, and on wet-work decorative techniques including faceting and texturing.

Workshop fee of $180 includes clay, two tools for decorating, and lunch both days.  Limit seven students.

August 8 - 9, 2009

Teapots

A hands-on focus on throwing teapots.  We'll emphasize the marriage of form and function needed to create graceful teapots.

Workshop fee of $180 includes clay, two tools for decorating, and lunch both days.  Limit seven students

In addition to my studio workshops, I enjoy teaching at outside venues.  Past conferences included presenting at The English Connection in Staunton, Virginia and Out of the Fire in Duluth, Georgia -- both conferences sponsored by The Potters Council.  In 2008, I did a one-day presentation for the Shenandoah Valley Potters Guild, and demonstrated for AMACO during NCECA.  In October 2008, I taught a week-long workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina.  I'll return to the AMACO booth at NCECA this April in Phoenix, and will teach again at John C. Campbell Folk School in January, 2010.

Please get in touch if you want information on future workshops here, or if you know of groups or venues where I might be able to teach. I love getting out into the world and sharing what I know about clay!
