Spring/Summer Workshops

I just posted my 2019 workshop schedule on this website. I’ll teach a workshop at the Bay School in Mathews, VA; three at City Clay in Charlottesville, VA; and one in Chapel Hill, NC. There’s still a little space on the calendar, so if your group or venue is interested in what I have to share, please get in touch.

John Campbell Folk School

Just home from a fine week at the Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Great fun with this lively, energetic group of potters. Three have active home studios; three had never worked on the wheel; and the other four were somewhere between in terms of experience.

Here’s a snapshot of their work at the end of five studio days. Everyone tried new things and made progress.

Three firings in a row

Hadn’t fired since last fall, so I have done three quick firings in a row. I wanted to wait until the glazes were unlikely to freeze again before getting them back into shape. Here are the before and after shots of the front of firing #1

And two tables of pots from firing #2.  I was particularly pleased with the Shino results!

The third firing is cooling right now and I will post results soon.

I am off to teach at John Campbell Folk School next week, have a new session of weekly classes starting at City Clay, and a new round of classes beginning at TeachinArt, so it would seem that my winter fallow spell is over.

Lids!

Just finished a great weekend workshop at City Clay in Charlottesville. It was a fun group! We made a variety of lidded pots — gallery lids, cap lids, flange lids, inset lids and a few self-creating lids made on enclosed forms. As always, City Clay provided a great work space and tremendously helpful support staff. It’s a wonderful place to take (or teach) a workshop or pottery class.

Artisans Studio Tour!!!

Nice match between these shino plates just out of my final firing and the crepe myrtle next to our mailbox.  If the leaves hold on, you can see both of them this weekend during the Artisans Studio Tour.  Almost ready here — just need to do some cleaning and rearranging, bake brownies, and set up the show.  Penny Sipple will join me with her wonderful leather bags again this year.  The two of us shared my Nelson studio several times, and I’m looking forward to spending the weekend with her.

We’ll be here Saturday and Sunday, November 10 and 11, from 10 am to 5 pm.  Map and full details on the show are at artisanstudiotour.com/

Article about my Crozet Artisan Depot show

Here’s a link to a nice article that came out today in our local Charlottesville paper, The Daily Progress.  It was fun to open the paper this morning to a full-page spread with photos.  My fifteen minutes of fame!

Two great workshops in a row!

I had a lot of fun these past two weekends teaching workshops.  The first was at the Reston Community Center pottery.  It was my first visit to that studio – what an excellent facility!  Everyone enjoyed making two-part pieces and playing with wiggle-wires and texturing.  Then last weekend was a one-day workshop focused on Lamps at Round Hill Arts.  I was struck by how clean and well-organized both places were.  And reminded how well potters tend to get along with each other.  During both workshops, participants shared space, equipment with great generosity.  Everyone jumped in to help with cleanup.  Both workshops fostered a great exchange of information and ideas.

Next up are two workshops at City Clay in Charlottesville, VA:

June 23-24 – Playing With Light – a two-day,  hands-on throwing workshop with a focus on creating texture and designs that look great when lit from above.

July 21-22 – Decorating in Wet Clay – a two-day,  hands-on throwing workshop focused on altering and decorating newly thrown pots using underglazes, wiggle-wires and carving.

Details and registration for both those workshops at the City Clay Website.

Playing with Light: Pottery by Nan Rothwell & Paintings by Junko Ono Rothwell

We’re in the final week of Junko’s and my show at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, and I am finally getting around to posting some photos of the show.  My friend Steve Palmer took these shots of the show.  It will be up through Sunday, April 29 at 5 pm (although the place is closed on Saturday afternoon 4/28 for a private event).

New work for April McGuffey Show

My sister in law, Junko Ono Rothwell, and will have a joint show of paintings and pots in the Main Gallery at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville during April.  Today I fired the third of four firings of work toward that show.  Here are some images of the second firing:

That’s the front tier of the kiln, just before I unloaded it.  Here’s the back tier:

And here are two images of paintings Junko has sent for our joint show:

That one is titled “North End of the Island”.  The next is called “Resting”

The show opens Tuesday, April 3 and runs through Sunday, April 29.  There is information about McGuffey at www.McGuffeyArtCenter.com
